Larsen beefs up his squad

BLOEMFONTEIN Celtic will today decide the fate of Under-23 national team star Phumelele "Ace" Bhengu and three other top strikers training with the club.

The three strikers are Stanton Lewis, Thabo Mangalo and Lethola Mofokeng, who have also represented South Africa at junior level.

"We have had many people coming to train with us. We are in the process of deciding who will remain and who will not be signed," said coach Clinton Larsen.

The former Manning Rangers and Orlando Pirates player has been using a series of friendlies to observe the triallists in action.

Celtic were in Johannesburg on Saturday to feature in a four-club tournament where they beat Platinum Stars 4-3 on penalties and lost 2-1 to SuperSport United.

"We are working hard to beef up the squad with players who will add value. We want to assemble a team that will challenge for silverware," Larsen said.

Phunya SeleSele have already signed defender Bevan Fransch from Maritzburg United after he trained with the team for a week.

"We are moving department by department, now the focus is on the attack, we want Celtic to play a more attacking pattern in the new season," Larsen said.

The Free State side have also included three amateur players into the team.

They are Luyanda Hlongwa, Ruzaigh Gamildien and Jackie Motsegwa.

"From my side I am very happy with the addition of these young players, and all three have very good potential to succeed at this level," Larsen said.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder said they were planning to play more friendly matches in Johannesburg this weekend.

"We want the team to be razor sharp in three weeks' time. Everything is going according to plan so far," the coach said.

Celtic have retained 90percent of their team from last season, including Moses Spandeel, Hlompho Kekana, Thabo Nthethe, Prince Hlela and Lennox Bacela.

They have released Nigerian Prince Olomu.
