Bester looking forward to Pirates' debut match - on his birthday!

New Buccaneer will be making his debut in the black and white jersey on his 28th birthday, against English premiership side Tottenham Hotspur

NEW Orlando Pirates recruit Rudolf Bester is excited to have joined the treble winners, saying he is looking forward to contributing to the success of the club.

The Namibian international joined Pirates this week in a swap deal which saw former Amajita winger Michael Morton joining Maritzburg United.

“This is a dream come true I was here on trial two years ago but things did not go well, I have always loved Pirates from childhood,” said Bester.“I spent a week on trial at Pirates in 2009, but I left the club after it was clear I was not going to secure a contract. I moved to Maritzburg United.

“Maybe the timing wasn’t right to play for Pirates at that time, but it doesn’t matter anymore because now I’m here and I’m raring to go.

“Pirates won the treble last season, so the expectations from the supporters are high. They expect us to maintain the winning momentum.

“We have a new coach in Julio Leal who has made it clear he is here to win trophies for Pirates. I decided to come to Pirates knowing very well that competition will be stiff.

“Pirates have an array of talented players but I will work hard to ensure that I command a regular position in the starting line-up.

“We will also be challenging for the African Champions League to get our second golden star after  the chairman Dr Irvin Khoza instructed us to win it.”

He said the current squad of players want to emulate the success of the Pirates’ Class of 1995 who went on to make history by becoming the only club in Southern Africa to win the African Champions League.

Bester said he was looking forward to making his debut for Pirates against English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur in the Vodacom Challenge on July 19.

“That will be a special day for me because I will be turning 28, I can’t wait to see myself wearing the popular black and white jersey of Pirates on the day.”
