Kay Motsepe Cup a honey pot for scouts

TALENT scouts will invade Bloemfontein next week where the 2011 South African Schools Football Association Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup will be played.

Sasfa general secretary Steve Pila said the national play-offs, where the winning school will pocket R1 million, will take place at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium from July 13 to 16.

The tournament is sponsored by Mamelodi Sundowns president and billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe through his foundation, in memory of his late mother Kay.

"We are delighted that the tournament is reaching its climax where all the nine provinces will be represented by their respective champions and runners-up," Pila said.

"Going to the land of Siwelele (Bloemfontein Celtic's supporters) is a great honour because this is the area where Ntate Petros Molemela (Former Celtic boss) fought hard to develop the game. This has been a great development tournament and the massive support we are getting from Ntate Motsepe is highly appreciated. The schools are now taking the competition seriously since we revised the prizes by introducing the R1 million for the winners."

He said they have decided to pay the money in kind to the winning school so that it will be used purely for the needs of the school and not benefit individuals.

"The winning school is required to submit a list of their needs, which will be verified. Subsequent to that, a team will assist the school to buy those items.

"We don't want a situation where the principal will buy a luxury car to drive around," said Pila, himself a former teacher and school principal.

Sasfa president Mandla "Shoes" Mazibuko said: "The tournament has generated massive interest from talent scouts and we hope to see some of the youngsters from this tournament playing in the PSL soon."
