SAFA has paid tribute to South African Breweries for its continued commitment to the development of soccer in the country.

Speaking at the SAB Under-21 national championships, which are being held in Eldorado Park this week, Safa deputy president Danny Jordaan said they appreciated the financial support by SAB.

"When Safa was formed in 1991, SAB gave us a charter flight to travel to West Africa to arrange for Bafana Bafana's first international friendly against Cameroon. We are happy that they are also involved in development, which is good because future Bafana Bafana stars will be unearthed at such events."

In his message to the participating players, Jordaan urged them to take a leaf from players like John "Shoes" Moshoeu and Lucky "Phinda Mzala" Lekgwathi, who have been in the game longer than others as a result of training hard.

"You won't win the treble like (captain of Orlando Pirates) Lucky if you don't work hard at training and live a clean life. You must also listen to your coaches."

Moshoeu, the Bafana Bafana legend, is the league's ambassador and is assisted by renowned development coach Floyd Mogale.

SAB's Vincent Maphai said: "We are proud the SAB Under-21 League has produced stars like Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Lucky Lekgwathi and Andile Jali."

l After walloping KwaZulu-Natal 4-1 in their opening match in Eldorado Park on Sunday, University Sport South Africa were hoping to make it two in a row at the expense of Northern Cape yesterday.

"Winning 4-1 in the opening game is a great start and we are looking forward to maintaining the winning rhythm," said assistant coach Monde Hlatswayo.

"We have assembled a great team capable of walking away with a gold medal."

Other products of the league include Punch Masenamela, Thapelo Tshilo and Vincent Kobola.
