Jordaan off to Zurich to raise development funds

THE South African Football Association is sticking to its commitment of ensuring that soccer development remains the main beneficiary of the 2010 Fifa World Cup legacy projects.

To confirm this, Safa will send its deputy president Danny Jordaan off to Zurich, Switzerland, to ask for a $70 million (R482 million) donation solely for football development.

Jordaan leaves tomorrow.

This was revealed at the launch of the new Carling Black Label Cup at the SAB World of Beer in Johannesburg yesterday.

The one-day tournament will feature two top South African clubs and traditional rivals - Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates - at Soccer City on July 30.

Also present at the launch yesterday was Dutch soccer legend Ruud Gullit, Safa deputy president Mwelo Nonkonyana, Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane and technical director Serame Letsoaka.

"We have made it clear we will be channelling more resources into development so that Bafana Bafana will be No 1 in Africa and in the top 20 on the world in terms of Fifa rankings," Jordaan said. "We also want to see all our junior national teams doing well.

"Our regions have been given cars and we will be presenting them with buses in July.

"Gone are the days when we used to run football from the boots of our cars. We are also busy building facilities for the regions to operate from fully fledged offices."

Speaking at the same platform, Gullit said he was happy to see Bafana doing well in post-World Cup era under Mosimane.

"The World Cup has brought an enormous boost for South Africa and it is good to see Bafana Bafana on the verge of qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations finals," said Gullit, who is also ambassador for the Carling Black Label Cup.

"I'm also impressed that people in South Africa are talking about development. I want to see Bafana Bafana continue to do well against some of the best teams in the world."
