Acting athletics chief accused of contempt

SPARKS are expected to fly at the Athletics South Africa assembly on July 30 after an associate member proposed a motion of no confidence in acting chairperson James Evans.

In a document leaked to Sowetan, South African Schools Athletics (Sasa) has accused Evans of disregarding the ASA constitution.

Evans is charged with representing the ASA council at consultations with the Department of Sport to "discuss matters pertaining to school sports, in particular athletics".

"Evans participated in the establishment of an advisory school athletics structure without the knowledge of ASA or Sasa," said Sasa general secretary Pepei Olevano. "The actions of Evans are undemocratic, authoritarian and disrespectful towards the ASA council. Urgent actions are required to address his actions which are contemptuous. towards ASA."

Evans could not be reached for comment but South African Athletes media officer Sam Mlangeni said: "This is an issue that will be dealt with by the ASA family but we know lobbying for the president's position is under way. The issue has to do with Boland Athletics politics. We should leave politics and fight for money from Lotto to look after the interests of athletes."

Sasa president Willie Mokatsanyane responded: "Our motion of no confidence has nothing to do with ASA politics in Boland."

ASA has not had a president since the suspension of Leonard Chuene. Among those expected to challenge for the position of ASA president include Harold Adams, Motlatsi Keikabile and Aleck Skosana.
