Shabba up for Gauteng award

BAFANA Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs star midfielder Siphiwe "Shabba" Tshabalala has described his nomination for the 2010 Gauteng Sports Awards as an honour.

Tshabalala was nominated in the category of sports personality of the year, to be elected by the public. He has become a big brand since making history by becoming the first player to score a goal at the 2010 Fifa World Cup, netting the opener in the 1-all draw against Mexico at Soccer City on June 11.

"The news could not have come in a more appropriate week, when South Africa is celebrating the one-year anniversary of hosting the 2010 World Cup," Tshabalala said.

"It is good that the government has introduced the awards to recognise sportsmen and women who are doing well and putting Gauteng on the international map.

"This is a wonderful project by MEC Lebogang Maile and the good thing about the awards is that codes like karate, korfball and skating are also included."

Other big names who have been nominated with Tshabalala are cricket star AB de Villiers and swimmer Natalie du Toit.

Maile urged the public to take part in voting for the sports personality of the year by sending the name of their favourite sports person to 33525.

The winners will be announced at Emperors' Palace in Kempton Park on June 23.

Other nominees are: Sportswoman of the year: Nomonde Magagula (karate), Michelle Marais (figure skating) and Mignon du Preez (cricket).

Coach of the year: Hein van der Lith (korfball), Nico Coetzee (wrestling) and Nkosinathi Moyo (volleyball).

Sportsman of the year: AB de Villiers (cricket), Gurthro Steenkamp (rugby) and Roland Schoeman (swimming).
