Bafana legends seek new coaching level

FORMER Bafana Bafana stars Doctor Khumalo, Neil Tovey and Steve Komphela have enrolled for the historic Safa Level 3 professional coaching course

Also attending the course in Pretoria are Thomas Madigage, Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba, Khabo Zondo, Farouk Khan and Manqoba Mngqithi.

Renowned German coach and former Safa director of coaching Horst Kriete is among the experts who are conducting the course.

"This is the best thing that has ever happened to South African football and we are now introducing a professional coaching licence," Safa technical director Serame Letsoaka said. He said the course will prepare the participants to work professionally at the highest level in football as coaches, instructors or youth and academy directors.

"We have spread the course over 63 days, taken in six phases with different content and topics. They will deal with tactical training and modern match analysis. Others are physical training and sports science, psychology and football training - mental skill training, pedagogics - teaching as an instructor and youth development," he explained.

Safa president Kirsten Nematandani said: "We have been developing players to perform better at the highest level and in this instance the coaches get to undergo a comprehensive high-level coaching construct."

Letsoaka, Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane and CAF and Fifa instructor in women's football Fran Hilton-Smith are also taking part as "participating officials".

"They will be delivering some lectures during the course and will also sit as participants," said Safa coaching education's Michael Nees.

"This is mainly to ensure that they obtain the highest football coaching qualification in the country and that they impart to others their already existing expertise in the field of coaching. Also as part of the legacy between Safa and the DFB (German Football Federation), we want this course to be run by locals in future."
