Strauss hones squad for World Series

PROTEAS netball coach Carin Strauss will use the four-day camp in North West to sharpen the national team for the Fastnet World Series in England.

The 19-member provisional squad will assemble at the High Performance Centre in Potchefstroom today for a training camp.

Strauss will name the final team of 12 players on Friday.

The Fastnet tournament, featuring the top six countries in the world, will be played in Liverpool, England, from November 19 to 21.

Other participating countries are England, New Zealand, Australia, Jamaica and Malawi, who are the top-ranked team on the subcontinent. This will be the Proteas' first camp since returning from the Commonwealth Games in India last month where they finished sixth overall.

Six players who were part of the team that went to India will not be available for the tour to England due to injuries and work commitments.

"We will put in practice different strategies with the special emphasis on the speed of the players because all our opponents in the competition are very fast," Strauss said yesterday.

She said they will also play a series of friendly matches in Potchefstroom to ensure that all players get the opportunity to press for a place in the squad.

The players who are unavailable are captain Liezel Wium, Leigh-Ann Zackey, Nthabiseng Moabi, Zanele Mdodana, Precious Mthembu and Christine Markgraaff.

The six new players will join veteran campaigners Sindiswe Gumede, Maryka Holtzhausen, Amanda Mynhardt, Claudia Basson, Zukelwa Cwaba and Erin Burger.
