Limpopo boxers out in force
THE dusty village of Elim near Thohoyandou in Limpopo will be buzzing with 50 amateur boxing bouts taking place on Sunday.
Boxers from Makhoma and Khubvi boxing clubs will compete at Elim Community Hall under the auspices of the Limpopo Amateur Boxing Organisation.
The tournament will be sponsored by Elim Super Spar. The provincial boxing body's deputy president, Eric Baloyi, said the tournament will help to instil the love of boxing in youngsters who will want to follow in the footsteps of role models such as Cassius Baloyi, Phillip Ndou, Joseph Makaringe and Isaac Hlatshwayo.
Baloyi, Cassius's father, said Limpopo's top fighters were discovered in similar tournaments.
Cassius remains the only South African fighter to win six world titles in three different weight divisions, while Ndou held the WBU strap. Hlatshwayo was the IBO lightweight and IBO and IBF welterweight champion, while Makaringe was the national welterweight king.
All these fighters, as well as Jeffrey Mathebula, Vincent Vuma and Oscar Chauke, were trained by Baloyi in the amateur ranks.
"We will use the tournament to prepare our boys for another competition that will feature boxers from America on November 6," he said.
