Five minutes with DJ Black Coffee
After landing a four months residency from June until September at HI Club in Ibiza, DJ Black Coffee will play his final set this weekend. His recent collaboration with Axe for a DJ competition will culminate in the international DJ playing alongside the lucky winner, Kutloano Nhlapo.
What are three things people don’t know about you?
1. That I don’t actually go clubbing except for when I’m working.
2. That I don’t drink or smoke.
3. I love art. I used to draw and I want to go back to (it). I used to draw cartoons a lot in high school. It’s something I’ve stopped doing, something I want to get back to doing.
You haven’t typically collaborated with many brands. How do you decide who to collaborate with?
For me, all brands are trying to sell products. It’s very important what they are saying to people. It’s cool to sell, but what are you leaving the people with, you know? And what really captured me about this (Axe campaign) is that the tagline is ‘find your magic.’ Finding magic is something we communicate every day. We really try to inspire people in everything we do. I think I’m one artist that’s been busy from the beginning –people know my story. And through my story I try and inspire a lot of people. So when you find a brand as great as this, telling people to find their magic …I want to be part of that---that’s what really interested me.
How would you define finding your magic?
It’s different things for different people. What I always try to communicate is, it’s not just about music; for me, it’s beyond. What I usually do on social media, is I’ll communicate the plan; this is what we’re working on, and it keeps people in the loop, so that they can see the what we go through, see the final product, just for them to see that anything is possible. This is how we try and inspire them.
What would be your dream collaboration?
It’s really tough to say. One of the people I’ve been mentioning forever is Drake, which just happened. I can hear Beyoncé, or Rihanna, in a Black Coffee production, so those would be two. I want to work with the best people in the world, and the best are not necessarily the most commercial, like Kaytranada. I love working with voices, before personalities, in my career that’s been something I’ve always done--look for voices.
