Country must take drastic action now to curb rampant gun violence

Reading about how South Africans are being killed daily in gun attacks is worrisome. Almost everyday we read or hear about shooting incidents somewhere.

It is even more traumatic when we see such shootings captured live on television or by CCTV cameras.

Thanks to the media, we get to know about these painful incidents all the time. The murder rate in SA is too high and, if we as a nation do not pay attention to this situation, we are all going to pay the price for the lawlessness that's taking placing here.

Because guns kill too many people in SA, we need to seriously look at our gun control laws. This issue is not about criminals only because even licensed gun holders kill their families, while some are careless with their handling of their guns.

We are a country at "war" and the future generations will find it difficult to live in a gun-free and peaceful country unless something drastic is done now. What is also shocking is that foreign nationals also carry guns in SA.

The government under its current laws finds it difficult to curb gun lawlessness. We can help help the situation as citizens to report illegal guns in the hands of criminals.

We must make gun control a daily discussion in churches, taxi ranks, schools and workplaces.

Let us keep SA safe for future generations.
