Teachers need to rethink their calling in a noble profession

Government has given its aligned union absolute power to manage education

When I trained as a teacher in the 1960s, our lecturers used to tell us that teaching is a calling not a vocation ('n roeping nie 'n beroep nie). They emphasised in no uncertain terms that teaching is a noble profession whose intention is to lead a child into maturity and to prepare him or her for the future.

For learning and teaching to be successful, all teachers must be on the level of readiness. A teacher who is ready to teach is the one who plans what and how (s)he will teach. It is incumbent on all teachers to teach learners with passion, dignity and loyalty.  ..
