Richard Vukeya could not believe his ears when Insurance Underwriters Managers (UIM) repudiated his claim on the basis that his premiums were paid from one of his companies he did not inform them about.

Vukeya, 42, of Northcliff, Johannesburg, said he registered a company called Lebone Mining Supplies Enterprises but added that it had been dormant since its registration.

Vukeya said he did not upgradehis information when he bought a car to transport goods for Vukeya Investments.

He said both companies are in his name and premiums are debited from the account of Vukeya Investments, which was up and running.

"The vehicle has always been used for Vukeya Investments operations and has never been used for mining supplies," Vukeya said.

The entrepreneur said one of his employees was involved in an accident. They had followed the claims procedure after reporting the accident at a police station.

Three months later, Vukeya said he received "a vague e-mail" that informed him that his claim had been rejected without an explanation.

"Unfortunately, your claim was referred to the rejection committee and we regret to inform you that the claim will not be entertained," Vukeya claimed the e-mail stated.

Upon inquiry, he was told they were getting premiums from Vukeya Investments and not from Lebone Mining.

"Lebone was in operation until October 2014. The vehicle was bought for Vukeya Investments' activities although it was financed through Lebone," Vukeya said.

He said the premiums were always paid from Vukeya Investments. At the meeting yesterday, UIM had a change of heart and decided to honour his claim.

Nico Knop, of UIM, agreed to settle the claim within the next two weeks. A delighted Vukeya said he will pay off the balance of his car loan and use the remaining money as a deposit for a new vehicle.
