Violating rules

THE disclosure by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) that a total of 19 train drivers face disciplinary action for misdemeanours related to train safety is most worrying

This especially in the light of last week's train accident in Soweto, which left 644 people injured.

Addressing a press conference this week Prasa chief executive Lucky Montana said the driver who smashed into a stationary train in Soweto - believed to be the cause of the accident - had been fired.

He said all train accidents countrywide over the past 12 months were as a result of drivers violating rules and that the 19 were being charged.

Prasa must be commended for handling the matter transparently, though we should be concerned at the number of professional lapses among the train drivers.
