Police botch?

WE just do not know what to make of yesterday's report that police might have botched the investigation into the killing of Constable Fihliwe Bengeza and the bombing of an ATM in Ekurhuleni a fortnight ago.

Last week the Hawks hyped up the arrest of 10 people as a breakthrough in their investigation. They also linked the suspects to a series of mall robberies and ATM bombings.

Yet, on Monday they released five of the suspected gang and charged the remaining four with possession of arms and ammunition only. All the police could say was that the four freed from custody could not be linked to any crimes.

It's cold comfort for the public that dangerous criminals responsible for this gruesome attack are still at large. Much so for the Bengeza family, who had expressed relief at the arrests.

How could the police get it so wrong?
