Hostile forces

JUDGING by their behaviour when confronted with their inadequacies, politicians are not particularly known for humility.

Experience has shown that instead of owning up to their mistakes, they in certain instances go to the extreme of blaming everything on "hostile forces".

In January, confronted with the billing mess in his city, Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo went into denial and insisted there was "no crisis".

This despite reports that an estimated 65 000 - 5% of the city's 1,3 million residents - were affected by exorbitant billing.

At the time, the city's MEC for finance, Parks Tau, admitted that the city was owed R10 billion, with R4 billion under investigation relating to the billing mess.

On Wednesday Masondo fell on his sword and apologised.

Hopefully this indicates he now realises "humility is essential to leadership because it authenticates one's humanity".
