The son of a U.S. district court judge has been sentenced to 109 years in prison for killing his wife in Puerto Rico.

Pablo Casellas told a judge on Thursday that he was innocent and that the sentence was an injustice. Casellas previously had requested to not attend the sentencing because the news media were authorized to cover it live.

He was found guilty Jan. 22 on charges including murder, weapons offenses and destroying evidence.

His wife, 46-year-old Carmen Paredes, was killed July 2012 at their home in a wealthy suburb. She was shot multiple times, including once in the forehead.

Casellas is the son of U.S. District Court Judge Salvador Casellas, a former Puerto Rico treasury secretary who was appointed to the federal bench in 1994.
