Last year was Australia's hottest since record-keeping began in 1910, with average temperatures 1.2 degrees above the long-term average of 21.8 degrees Celsius, the weather bureau said Friday.

Bureau of Meteorology figures show every part of Australia had above-average temperatures in 2013.

Since 2001 only one year, 2011, has been cooler than average. "The past year was characterized by persistent and widespread warmth," the bureau said in its annual climate statement.

"Both maximum and minimum temperatures were well above average."
