India's first radio station for the gay community aims to change mindsets in the largely conservative country, its owner said Thursday.
"One of the main goals of Q Radio is to serve as a platform where even homophobes, religious and fundamentalist groups can begin a dialogue with the LGBT community," said Anil Srivatsa, chief executive of Radiowalla.in, the online radio portal that owns the station.
"This dialogue will help change mindsets, create better understanding and bring social change," he told dpa.
Q Radio has been broadcasting from the southern city of Bangalore since last month.
Its programming is tailored to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) audience, "a large special interest group which is left out in India," Srivatsa said.
The station aims to "give them media representation as well as a common ground to exchange their thoughts," he said.
Q Radio plays songs from LGBT-friendly and gay artists and discusses issues faced by the gay community in India.
Homosexuality was decriminalized in 2009, but homosexuals are still subject to discrimination and lack basic rights, campaigners say.
