A Maui hospital says a German visitor who lost her arm in a shark attack last week is on life support.

Maui Memorial Medical Center spokeswoman Carol Clark said Monday that Jana Lutteropp is in very critical condition.

Lutteropp was snorkeling up to 100 yards (90 meters) off Palauea Beach in Makena when the shark bit off her arm Wednesday afternoon.

Bystanders on shore heard the 20-year-old scream. A California high school teacher swam out to bring her to shore.

It's not known what type of shark bit Lutteropp. State officials say witnesses didn't see the animal.

There was another shark attack in Hawaii on Sunday. A 16-year-old surfer suffered injuries on both legs after a shark bit him southeast of Hilo.
