Lloyd Webber turns political scandal into musical

Andrew Lloyd Webber is turning one of Britain's most notorious 20th-century political scandals into a musical.

"Stephen Ward" tells the story of a major figure in the Profumo Affair, which rocked the government in 1963.

Ward was an osteopath and socialite who introduced escort Christine Keeler to War Secretary John Profumo.

They had an affair, but Keeler was also allegedly sleeping with a Russian spy. The scandalous mix of sex and Cold War politics ended Profumo's career, destroyed Ward and riveted the nation.

The show features music by "Phantom of the Opera" composer Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Don Black and a script by "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" playwright Christopher Hampton.

Directed by former National Theatre chief Richard Eyre, it is due to open at London's Aldwych Theatre in December.
