Widow resurrects husband with subway recording

A widow's wish to hear her late husband's voice again has prompted London Underground to restore a 40-year-old "mind the gap" recording.

Margaret McCollum used to frequently visit Embankment station to hear the iconic announcement, voiced by her husband Oswald Lawrence four decades ago. When she noticed last year that it was not broadcast there anymore, she wrote to Transport for London to see if she could get a copy of the recording.

London commuters have heard various recordings of the "mind the gap" messages since the 1960s.

Transport for London, the authority managing the subway, said Sunday it was so touched by McCollum's story that it has sent her a CD of the recording. Officials are working to restore Lawrence's announcement at Embankment station.
