Three Hong Kong hikers and two firemen had to be airlifted to hospital after being attacked by a swarm of bees, government officials said Wednesday.

The hikers were in a party of 40 walking in the hilly countryside around the Sai Kung area Tuesday morning when they were attacked by the swarm, which they are believed to have disturbed.

Two firemen, called out to help the hikers, were also stung several times.

The injured were taken by the government's flying services helicopter to hospital where they were treated for non-serious allergic reactions.Author: Hazel Parry
