Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a cop who was shot and killed while tracing a gang that had hijacked a truck.
W/O Johannes du Rand, 48, was killed after the hijacking of a truck along the N3 near Villiers in the Free State on Friday at about 3am.
He was shot by the suspects while tracing the truck on Saturday.
At the time of his death, the detective commander had served 29 years in the police.
Yesterday police said they believed the two men they arrested were part of a gang which hijacked the truck.
National police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola led a delegation to the home of Du Rand on Saturday to show support to the grieving family.
In another case, police have launched a manhunt for two suspects responsible for the murder of 41-year-old Sgt Leka Maja who was shot and killed during the tracing of illegal firearms in Mamelodi on Thursday.
Masemola said three suspects were fatally wounded, and four pistols and three rifles were seized.
Maja was part of the tactical operations management section within the directorate for priority crime investigation (DPCI) and had 14 years of service.
Masemola was joined by the national head of the directorate, Lt-Gen Godfrey Lebeya, at the home of Maja in Mamelodi East, Pretoria.
He said the police had declared war against criminals who attack and kill police officers.
“This is a war that has been called by criminals, we cannot come second. We cannot co-rule with criminals; communities have put their trust in us, and we need to fight back to ensure the safety and security of our communities and police officers.
"We are going to respond accordingly until we win this fight against criminals. The families of these officers are looking up to us to ensure that those that are behind these killings and attacks face the full might of the law”, said Masemola.
Police have set aside R25m to enhance the safety and security of all police service point for this financial year. This follows seven police officers killed in the past week.
