Former Mpumalanga agriculture, rural development, land and environmental affairs MEC Mandla Msibi, who was charged with double murder, and saw the criminal charges later withdrawn, is set to stage a comeback in the provincial cabinet.

Msibi is expected to return to the portfolio he previously held, as Mpumalanga premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane is set to reshuffle her cabinet at 9am on Friday.

Mtshweni-Tsipane's office has called for a media briefing following calls from political figures, especially those in support of Msibi to have him reinstated. Msibi was arrested on October 11 last year after handing himself over to the Nelspruit police station.

He was charged with the murder of  Sindela Sipho Lubisi and Dingane Ngwenya in August last year outside Coyote's shisanyama in Mbombela. The third victim Sfiso Mpila survived.

Msibi was released on a R20 000 bail. He had labelled the charges against him 'politically motivated'. On April 2, Msibi was voted in as a provincial treasurer in absentia during an elective conference in Emalahleni.

On September 5, the criminal charges against Msibi were withdrawn by the Mpumalanga division of the high court and he resumed his work the following day as ANC provincial treasurer.

Other people who are set to be reshuffled as MECs are finance, economic development and tourism MEC Vusi Mkhatshwa and public works, roads and transport MEC Mohita Latchminarain.

The rest will be sifting of positions including the one of provincial chairperson of the ANC Mandla Ndlovu who is current MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs.

"We always expected that the premier must call a cabinet reshuffle after Msibi was exonerated, she was quick after a day when Msibi got arrested she fired him,  when he was exonerated we expected her to act swiftly as she did when he was fited," said Msibi's supporter.
