The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has rejected “with contempt” allegations that it had information on a coup being plotted against the Botswana government.

The SANDF responded after a report from a Botswana newspaper which claimed that there was credible intelligence from the "South African Defence Force (SADF)" (sic) and the United Nations that preparations for a coup were building up in Botswana.

“The SANDF has noted with dismay adverse claims on certain Botswana media platforms alleging that the SANDF had credible intelligence about a looming coup in Botswana.

“The SANDF wishes to state that the reports contain factual inaccuracies, and rejects with contempt the allegations that the SANDF had information that a coup was plotted against the government of Botswana,” SANDF said in a statement.
