A record number of people living outside South Africa have successfully applied to vote in the upcoming general elections.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Thursday announced that the number of people who will be voting abroad increased by 2,618 from 26,716 to 29,334.
According to the IEC, these are people who have already registered to vote but have declared that they will not be abroad when the country goes to the polls on May 8. Of this number 2,868 will be voting on the African continent, 7,174 in Asia, 14,838 in Europe, with 2,196 in North America and 2,133 and 125 will cast their votes in Oceania and South America respectively.
The London foreign mission will have 9,084 people casting their votes while 1,542 and 1,355 will be crossing their ballots in Dubai and The Hague respectively.
“Voters whose applications have been approved will vote at the foreign mission indicated on Saturday April 27 2019 between 07H00 and 19H00. They are required to take with them their South African ID document [either a green bar-coded ID, a smartcard ID or a valid temporary ID certificate) and their valid passport,” the IEC said.
The IEC announced in February that the total number of people who registered to vote stood at 26.7-million, boosted by more than 1.1-million people who used the final registration weekend to register.

The IEC announced in February that the total number of people who registered to vote stood at 26.7-million, boosted by more than 1.1-million people who used the final registration weekend to register.
