President Cyril Ramaphosa’s campaign to have South Africans clean their country has received a big boost as the private sector has given it a thumbs-up.

On Friday, about R1.4bn in pledges was made from companies in chemical and waste management and organisations which support Operation Phakisa and the Good Green Deeds programme.

The money was pledged in East London, Eastern Cape, as Ramaphosa launched Good Green Deeds,  aimed at motivating all South Africans to clean their environment.

“As citizens of South Africa we want to raise the level of consciousness that we must want to live in a clean environment. We must want to live in clean cities … because when we do that we are then able to have the litter properly packaged, and that creates jobs, companies and a sector and an industry,” Ramaphosa said.

He called on South Africans to propose at least one day in a month on which every community in the country gets out and cleans its area as is done successfully in Rwanda.
