A 28-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping his ex-girlfriend in Johannesburg.

According to police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele the incident happened  at the woman's flat at the corner of Polly and Albertina Sisulu streets on Sunday afternoon.

Mbele said  the  31-year-old was sleeping in her room when her ex-boyfriend knocked at the door, begging for her to open for him so that they could talk. While inside he allegedly raped and assaulted her. She screamed for help and the neighbours came to her rescue.

Mbele said the suspect ran away but was later arrested.

“Investigation is under way and the  suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg magistrate's court,” said Mbele.
