Gauteng has claimed to be the only province to achieve a 100% clean audit outcomes in all its departments in the 2017/2018 financial year.
The province went public with the achievement after premier David Makhura met with auditor-general Kimi Makwetu yesterday morning where the audit outcomes were presented.
Makwetu's spokesperson Africa Boso said they will only be able to speak on the provincial government audit outcomes in two weeks time at the official announcement event.
"The audit outcomes for the provincial and national governments will be launched on November 21," Boso said yesterday.
In a statement, the province boasted: "The Gauteng provincial government is happy to announce that for the third consecutive year we have received 100% unqualified audit outcome in the 2017/2018 financial year in all government departments."
The statement claimed that only Gauteng province achieved such a feat this year.
Makhura said this was "an indication of the commitment made to ensure that public finances were managed well and that all costs incurred are accounted for. It is of utmost importance to ensure that all resources are used towards improving the quality of life of the people of Gauteng," Makhura said in the statement.
He added: "Although there is still much work to be done, I want to thank team Gauteng for managing public finances efficiently and ensuring that we achieve this outcome."
The national government launched an Operation Clean Audit 2014 in 2009 in an effort to achieve clean audits across the local and provincial governments. The goal was, however, not achieved as many municipalities and some provinces, are still failing to achieve clean audits now - four years after the 2014 target.
For an example, no single municipality in the North West, Limpopo and Free State managed to achieve a clean audit in the 2016/2017 financial years.
Midvaal was the only Gauteng municipality to achieve an unqualified financial statements "with no material findings on the quality of the performance report", according to the auditor-general.
