Police have revealed further details of how a group of students found themselves in the middle of a deadly robbery in the Johannesburg CBD earlier this week.

Captain Kay Makhubele on Wednesday said the group had clashed with a taxi driver they had hired to take them back to Krugersdorp.

The group was believed to have been students of the Muslim School in Azaadville.

"Preliminary information indicates that the group were from the Kruger National Park where they had allegedly spent some time on vacation. On arrival in Johannesburg‚ out of frustration with their regular driver who was delayed‚ they allegedly hired another taxi in town. While en route to Krugersdorp‚ their regular driver called. They then asked the taxi driver to take them back to where they would meet their regular driver‚" said Makhubele.

"It is reported that the driver then accused them of wasting his time‚ for which they offered to pay but he refused and instead drove around the CBD with them until two unknown persons stopped the taxi. One was carrying a firearm and the other a knife. The pair took the students' phones and wallets. One of the students was fatally shot when he allegedly refused to hand over his belongings‚ while another was stabbed‚" Makhubele added.

Police are investigating a case of murder‚ attempted murder and armed robbery.
