Hundreds of residents of Ramaphosa informal settlement on the East Rand have taken to the streets this morning to protest about poor service delivery in their area.

Police had to use teargas to disperse the angry crowd.

Residents barricaded all the roads in the area with burning tyres and rocks.

In the morning a truck was torched. Themba Phuzi a resident said they are tired of empty promises.

"This is the only language the government understands. Our ward 42 councillor has failed the residents. We dont have houses, toilets and water. Those are basic services that people cannot live without,"  Phuzi said.

Children as young as preschool age joined the protests alongside older residents of the community who sang revolutionary songs of the Struggle era.

"As you can see sewage is flowing down the streets which poses a health hazard to our kids. We can't even enjoy our meals because the smell is unbearable in this area," Phuzi added.
