A scanner belonging to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) at the Beitbridge border gate in Musina, Limpopo, helped identify a load of explosives in a truck and led to the arrest of three people on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said a search operation was conducted on a truck that had been stopped for scanning at a SARS scanner at the border gate.
"Upon scanning, a suspicious image inside the trailer horse of the truck was identified and subsequently a consignment of explosives was discovered," Ngoepe said.
He identified the items as 750 blasting cartridge explosives and three rolls of explosive cables.
Ngoepe said the truck was also confiscated.
He said the street value of the explosives was estimated at R300000.
"The suspects, aged between 36 and 45, were arrested for possession of explosives," he said, adding that the origin and destination of the explosives were still being determined.
The arrested men will appear in the Musina Magistrate's Court soon.
"This goes to show that we are hitting hard on criminal syndicates in all clusters, including ports of entry. We are determined to double our
efforts and take the criminals head on," he said.
