Mpumalanga premier Refilwe Mtsweni has once again reshuffled her cabinet as part of what she said was strengthening government.

Mtsweni heeded a call by National Health Education and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) to remove MEC for health Gillion Mashego from the portfolio.

Announcing her second reshuffle since she took office yesterday, Mtsweni said after consultation with the organised labour she found that the relationship between the MEC (Mashego) and the department has reached an irreparable stage.

Praising Mashego, Mtsweni said the problem with the department of health was the inheritance of historical challenges.

Mashego who headed the department of health which is over R1 billion in accruals has been moved to the department of public works, roads and transport (PWRT) while former MEC for the PWRT Sasekani Manzini was moved to replace Mashego in the department of health.

“We all know the general outcry that we don't seem to be ferrying well in the health sector, we then decided to go out and check on the state of our health facilities, and indeed we realized that there are certain matters of concern.”

We had quiet fruitful discussions, we came up with resolution to implement the issues, we appeal to our people to monitor the interventions we have proposed. Above all the union has indicated a bit of discontent as far is their relationship with the MEC and I need to put this into correct perspective unequivocally. I want to site that MEC Mashego is one of the good (leaders) we have in this cabinet,” said Mtsweni.

The Democratic Alliance said Manzini is being set up for failure.

“We do think that the financial crisis will take a while to be stable, we believe they must be placed under administration. The department is under the brink of collapse, there's no way the new MEC is going to rescue the department overnight. Let the treasurer take over and on that we want Manzini to give us a 100 days plan to rescue the department. They are setting Manzini to failure because the department is the worse in the province,” said DA leader in Mpumalanga Jane Sithole.
