The brother of a man who was killed in an Ennerdale holding cell, allegedly by two police officers has pleaded for them to be denied bail.

Constables Derrick Johnson and Abraham Dintwe are expected to apply for bail this morning at the Protea Magistrates Court for the murder of Innocent Sebediela.

Sebediela was assaulted to death, allegedly by the two policemen on June 13.

During the assault, the 45-year-old man was allegedly choked and his face covered with a teargas-filled plastic bag.

Sebediela and 6 others were arrested for allegedly breaking into his brother-in-law’s house.

“The fact we had to bury our brother without the help of the police really hurt us. They (the officers) have not shown any  remorse. Their superiors never even came to our house to at least apologise for what happened,” Moses Sebdiela said.

He said despite burying his brother a week ago, they were still coming to terms with his death.

“It will not be fair for these officers to be granted bail and walk around freely while my brother is six feet under,”  Moses said.

Sebediela was allegedly assaulted by the officers and detained without being registered in the relevant SAPS registers.

"It is alleged that on June 13, Vispol (visible policing) were following information on a housebreaking and theft case. They apprehended seven suspects, whom they took to the holding cells," Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.

"The duty officer found the deceased's wet clothes in the cells and during investigation it was found that the deceased was assaulted and had water poured on to him."

Dlamini said an investigation found that Sebediela had injuries all over his body and witness statements confirmed the alleged assault by the two police officers.
