A 28-year-old man who was assaulted by members of the community after allegedly raping a 69-year-old woman has died while in police custody‚ Eastern Cape police confirmed on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Captain Dumile Gwavu said that Bongani Qubu‚ of Uniondale‚ is alleged to have kicked down the door of the woman’s home in Thembalethu‚ threatened her with a knife and raped her in the early hours of Monday.

“He fell asleep on the bed after the rape and the woman called for help from the community who assaulted him.

“He was rescued by the police from the community and got medical treatment from an ambulance. He was detained for rape at Thembalethu police station where he died later‚” said Gwavu.

Gwavu said a case of murder was being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

“The community is urged not to take the law into their own hands and anyone who acts against the law will face the law‚” Gwavu added.
