A woman has relived the horror  acid   attack  at her neighbour’s baby shower that has left her nursing severe burn wounds on her body.

The 27-year-old mother told Sowetan yesterday how she was doused with  acid  brought to the baby shower in a container by her attacker.

The incident happened in Diepkloof Extension 4, Soweto, two weeks ago.

The woman, who did not want to be named because she was ashamed that her employers would find out what really happened to her, spent two days in hospital following the  attack .

She was burnt on her arms chest, thighs, buttocks and back.

She said her experience felt like a nightmare she could not wake up from.

Her attacker was someone she knew well and who she had an altercation with at the baby shower.

“We were sitting and talking when one of the women spoke about how she had been married for 23 years.

“The woman who attacked me then asked me why we were gossiping about her. Another lady reiterated that we were not talking about her.

“My attacker picked up a whiskey bottle and attempted to hit her but was blocked by other women,” the victim said.

She said her attacker had been drinking and she left the house only to return with a container in her hand, and pretended that she had forgotten her lip gloss behind.

“I had just said goodbye to the other women when, out of nowhere, she came closer to me and started calling me names. Before I could respond I felt like I was sprinkled with water. Immediately I started feeling hot. My clothes turned pink, then they developed holes. I was screaming and took all my clothes off. I then ran to the tap for cold water, and stayed under the running tap. Other women brought me ice blocks but the burning wouldn’t stop,” she said.

She was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital where she was admitted for two days.

“Doctors said I was burnt by an unknown chemical. I feel like the  acid  is digging further into my skin. I can’t sleep at night. I sleep on the couch because I am fearful,” she said.

Her attacker was arrested and charged with attempted murder on Monday.

She will appear in court tomorrow for bail application.

The victim’s aunt, Nokuzola, 60, said the attacker came and apologised to the family before she was arrested.

“She said she did not know why she burnt her. She just cried,” Majola said.

Another aunt, Fikile, 51, said she was worried that the  acid  might eventually kill. “We are scared because we we do not know if it is still eating into her flesh.” The victim said all she wanted was justice.

“I want her [the attacker] to be locked up. Her sister said she overreacts every time people speak about marriage because her marriage failed.”

Captain Hitler Ngwenya confirmed the case.
