The African National Congress (ANC) was well ahead of the opposition as votes were being counted in Limpopo on Thursday.

The ruling party had 66.7% of the vote at midday with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) following with 16.7%‚ while the Democratic Alliance (DA) came in third with 10.1%.

Only 44%% of votes had been counted‚ but ANC leaders in the province were confident that the party will be in control of all the bigger municipalities by the time each vote had been counted.

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi told reporters at the Polokwane IEC centre: “This is a sight for relief because some of us have been here the whole night. This‚ so far‚ is a sign that people still have confidence in the organisation.”

She predicted that the bigger municipalities‚ which are currently run by the ANC‚ would not be going to any other party.

“I am confident‚ in the province‚ that we are going to get all of them.”

The party had already won the Belabela and Maruleng municipalities.

But‚ IEC spokesperson in Limpopo Nkaro Mateta said it was too early for any party to celebrate.

“The big municipalities are not yet done‚ we are still waiting for Polokwane‚ we are still waiting for Thulamela‚ Makhado and Tzaneen as well... All those would actually determine provincial percentages‚” Mateta said.
