Hundreds of people gathered outside former president Nelson Mandela's Houghton, Johannesburg, home singing struggle songs in honour of the struggle icon early on Friday morning.
Some dressed in pyjamas, and others wrapped in blankets, waved the South African flag, and lit candles as they sang the South African national anthem.
"Let's unite and do it for Madiba," a woman told a group of strangers.
"Let's stand together."
A group formed on the corner of Fourth and 12th streets where people sang and danced.
Roughly translated one of the songs meant: "This Nelson Mandela, if you haven't seen him, you don't know the man."
Flowers, cards and candles were laid in the flower beds near the home's gate as police officers looked on.
A man and woman brought a bag of candles and packed them out neatly on the grass before lighting them.
There were camera flashes as people took pictures and recorded videos.
