A meeting of Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party central committee held on Sunday in Harare has removed President Robert Mugabe as its head and appointed‚ his former deputy‚ Emmerson Mnangagwa‚ to take charge of the party in the interim.

The dismissal of Mugabe marks the end of his political life and the resurrection of Mnangagwa’s political life which ended prematurely earlier this month after Mugabe fired him from his post as deputy president in government and the Zanu-PF politburo expelled him from the party.

The firing of Mugabe by Zanu-PF puts more pressure on the 93-year-old ruler to step down.Mugabe is now politically isolated ‚ rejected socially as thousands took to the streets on Saturday to call for his removal and the military—once the bedrock for his rule — have also broken ranks with him.
