Emergency workers in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands are searching for a foetus believed to be buried in the Howick area.
An official said on Tuesday that the six-month-old foetus was allegedly dumped on February 14. It is alleged that the mother aborted her unborn baby.
"It seems the community found out about it. The mother then went to the local police station. Initially police officials were informed that the foetus was put into a plastic shopping bag and thrown over the Howick Falls.
"But now more information has emerged that the foetus has been buried in the region of the mother's home," he said.
The official said the search was continuing. "As it stands the mother is a suspect."
The dumping of babies in KwaZulu-Natal has been in the spotlight in recent weeks, most notably after a newborn baby girl was rescued from a storm water drainpipe in Newlands East two weeks ago.
Her mother has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
