There was a sombre mood at Vilakazi's home yesterday as SABC bosses visited the family. Acting group CEO Nomsa Philiso and the former chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoneng were among those who paid the family a visit.
Motsoeneng, who appointed Vilakazi to the position, said he was impressed about his dedication to his job. "He was not a yes man. Sizwe would have arguments with me if he believed I was at fault. He would argue his point and he made a lot of sense," Motsoeneng said.
He said Vilakazi was an integral part of the SABC.
SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said Vilakazi had a remarkable legal mind and exceptional intuition.
"He led the corporation's legal division with unsurpassed talent and perseverance. He executed his duties without compromising the organisation's core values," said Kganyago.
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu said police have launched a manhunt for three suspects in connection with the murder of Vilakazi.
"Nothing was stolen and the three suspects fled the scene with a blue hatchback Polo Vivo - registration couldn't be spotted," she said.
Vilakazi, who the family said was not married, is survived by his six children - four boys and two girls.

Vilakazi, 42, was shot and killed at a bottle store he co-owned with his father, about 5km from his home in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.
Vilakazi's sister, Nandi, told Sowetan the family had many questions over her brother's murder.
"We do not know what it [his killing] could have been in relation to. We want to know the motive behind his killing, who could have done it and why," Nandi said.
"Sizwe was in the store with our father and they were closing up the store at around 8pm. They heard a knock on the front door and Sizwe went to check if it was a customer."
