Law enforcement agents have made a breakthrough in the murder case of a Soweto Flying Squad police officer who was shot and killed on Heritage Day.

Thobja Motumo, 36, lost his life while he and his colleague were chasing a suspicious vehicle in Mofolo.

A 14-year-old passer-by was also shot and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Motumo is survived by his wife, Mamere, 27, and two children aged 13 and 4.

Gauteng MEC for community safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane yesterday released a statement praising the police, Johannesburg Metro Police Department and the Gauteng Traffic Police for the arrest.

"Two suspects were arrested in the early hours of [Tuesday] in Jabulani and were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition," Nkosi-Malobane said.

"I commend the police officers who worked around the clock to make a breakthrough in this case.

"We cannot fold our arms, sit back and allow criminals to hold us to ransom. We will not rest until all suspects involved in these callous and inhumane criminal activities are brought to book and face the full might of the law," she said, adding that residents should blow the whistle against any criminal elements in their communities.

Nkosi-Malobane's spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo said the suspects were due to appear in court today.

Meanwhile, police detectives yesterday swooped on flats in Chiawelo and arrested two suspects aged 31 and 34 for allegedly murdering security guard Joseph Khonzana earlier last month while he was on his way to work.

"He was approached by the two suspects who robbed him of his two cellphones. He was then shot dead by the two suspects when they could not find a firearm on him," said Moroka police station Captain Mpande Khoza.

"One of the suspects was arrested [yesterday] morning and he then led the police to the second suspect. The second suspect was also arrested, When the police searched the flats where one of the suspects is residing they found two bags full of various brands of cellphones."

Khoza said a total of 101 cellphones were ultimately recovered at the flat.

The two suspects are due to appear at the Protea Magistrate's Court tomorrow and they are facing charges of murder, armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
