SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) cards belonging to 57 elderly people have been found in possession of a self-confessed Soweto loan shark‚ the Joburg metro police said on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old man was also found in possession of 148 identity documents‚ which he alleged belonged to his customers‚ said chief superintendant Wayne Minnaar.

“[He] was arrested when officers stopped and searched a BMW which looked suspicious along Modise Drive in Meadowlands Soweto‚” said Minnaar.

“The suspect confessed to being a money lender and is likely to appear in the Meadowlands Magistrate’s Court soon for contravention of the Identity Act and the National Credit Control Act‚” he said.

Minnaar said the identity documents and Sassa cards would form part of evidence of the case.

Those in need of their identity documents could contact the Meadowlands police station and the local court for assistance.

“It is unlikely they would be charged for any offence‚” said Minnaar.
