Family relieved after arrest of siblings' 'killer'

The arrest of a man who allegedly shot and killed two Alexandra siblings has brought their family a step closer to finding justice, according to the pair's sister.

Tumi Sefolo, 25, and her brother Tshepo Sefolo, 23, were allegedly shot by Tumi's ex-boyfriend following an argument last week. The siblings were killed in front of their four children.

The pair's sister Matshidiso Sefolo said after hearing that police had apprehended the man who is allegedly responsible for the murders, the family was hopeful of finding closure.

"We feel safe now because he is behind bars. We couldn't go out thinking that he would come and kill the children. The police told us that his uncle handed him over to the Alexandra police on Sunday," said Matshidiso.

Tumi and Tshepo were buried at the Waterfall cemetery in Midrand on Saturday.

Matshidiso said the children were yet to undergo trauma and psychological counselling because the family was busy with funeral preparations.

The alleged killer's arrest came a few days after Police Minister Fikile Mbalula met with senior officers at the police station. Mbalula promised the family that the man will be arrested.

He had visited the family after allegations that Tumi had gone to the police station to report abuse allegedly in the hands of her ex-boyfriend before she was killed. She had been turned away.

The family alleged that a week before Tumi was murdered, the ex-boyfriend and father of her two daughters, allegedly hit her with a bottle of beer in her sleep.

Police spokesman captain Kay Makhubele said: "It is alleged that the suspect had a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. On the day of the incident he just came and found the younger brother outside, he asked her whereabouts and the younger brother called her.

"Without saying a word the suspect took out the gun and started shooting at the lady and later shot the younger brother who was trying to stop him from shooting at the sister".

Makhubele said Tumi died on the scene while Tshepo succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.

Makhubele said the alleged killer will appear in court soon to face a murder charge.
