A Limpopo family whose elderly relative was raped said it would take them a long time to forget the incident or forgive the rapist.

That was said by the 67-year-old woman's granddaughter, who cannot be named to protect her identity.

The old woman was raped while sleeping in her house in Mbambamecisi village near NkowaNkowa outside Tzaneen in the early hours of Sunday.

A 23-year-old man, who is known to the family, allegedly smashed the house's window pane to gain entry . He is accused of raping the grandmother.

He later fell asleep next to the woman.

She was alone at the time. Her granddaughter, 30, said she was called by her grandmother's neighbour after they saw the man in the house.

"When I arrived I found him sleeping, with his pants on his knees," she said.

She said the man had previously dated her younger sister and the relationship ended four years ago.

"It was not the first time he went to my granny knocking and demanding to see his estranged girlfriend. He had done it twice in the past, but not forcefully entering the house," she said.

"She screamed for help, but no one came out to assist."

Upon entering, the grandmother allegedly asked the man what he wanted and he reportedly told her he wanted to "have sex" with her.

"He was smelling of alcohol and did not have strength to stand up and leave after forcing himself on my grandmother," she said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment after the ordeal. She is currently living with her grandchildren in the village.

She added the man's mother had visited them to apologise and they rejected her apology and financial offer from the man's family to withdraw the charges .

Police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the man appeared in the Ritavi Magistrate's Court yesterday on a rape charge and the case was postponed to July 17. He is in custody.
