A massive gas explosion has unearthed an abalone poaching factory in a suburban area in Cape Town.

When police were called out to a gas explosion in Mowbray this weekend they found a man and woman who were in need of medical intervention due to the explosion.

The police were summoned by a neighbour and not the injured parties.

Police found more than they bargained for when they entered the house — abalone with a street value of R2.8million was discovered on the premises.

Police further investigated the premises and found containers and buckets with abalone.

Three suspects will be appearing in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.
