Eighteen people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a central Durban high-rise building on Wednesday.
It is understood that the fire was confined to an electrical distribution board.
However‚ smoke had billowed through the halls of the City Life building‚ prompting an evacuation and the closure of Anton Lembede [Smith] Street.
Rescue Care spokesperson Ceron Lennox said: “A total of 18 patients were treated at the scene by paramedics. All of them displayed symptoms of mild to moderate smoke inhalation‚” she said.
“They have been transported by ambulance to hospitals in the city for further medical care.”
Lennox said that the road remained closed while fire-fighters attended to the scene.
“The road is closed and traffic is severely affected. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.”
