Cape Flats poison probe following deaths of 2 children

The City of Cape Town is investigating a case of suspected poisoning following the death of two children on the Cape Flats.

This comes after 10 people‚ mostly minors‚ were hospitalised for eating poisoned meat in Brown’s Farm on Monday.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security‚ and Social Services‚ JP Smith‚ said the municipality’s Environmental Health Department would investigate the matter.

“The investigation in this case will cover a number of aspects‚ including site visits to the home of the victims‚ the premises of the vendor where the food was purchased before preparation‚ and the farm where the vendor purchased the live chicken‚” said Smith.

He said officials have already secured samples of the food that the victims consumed and they have been sent to various laboratories for testing.

Smith said even though the city did not want to speculate on the case‚ it suspects this is an isolated incident.

“This is a very tragic incident and our condolences go out to the family who have lost two young children... I assure the family and the community at large that the city will do everything possible to expedite the aspects of the investigation that fall within our mandate‚” said Smith.
